BUCS Round-up

This week, there was a crazy occurrence -  all 14 of our regularly competing teams were due to play a match either home or away. Sports Park was packed, FitZone was intense to say the least, and buses were constantly coming and going to and from Treforest campus to the corners of Wales and beyond!

Match Results

Football Women’s 1s

Making yet another far journey was Football Women’s 1s, who travelled to Southampton to play against their Women’s 1s. The journey was long and treacherous, and unfortunately the team suffered from a 10-0 loss to Southampton. It’s been a rough and tough couple BUCS Wednesdays from the Women’s 1s, and that might be due to the miles and miles they’ve had to travel to their fixtures, but luckily we’ll be welcoming them back to Sports Park next week for their second head-to-head against Exeter Women’s 2s that kicks off at 2pm! Go and show up for our team - give them a warm welcome back to campus!

Badminton Open 1s Vs Badminton Open 2s

A bit of... friendly (?) competition took place in FitZone this week between the USW Open 1s and USW Open 2s. Although it might not come as a surprise considering it was our 1s against our 2s, the end result landed on 8-0 to USW Open 1s, but it was an intense experience for both players and spectators! To make things even worse, they will be playing against each other next week in the Open Western Conference Cup, where one of our teams will be knocked out in Round 2 of the knockout phase, and the victor carrying through to the Quarter-Final. At least we know one of our teams will make it to the QF! It’s not a match to miss, so make sure you’re in FitZone for 1pm next Wednesday!

Football Men’s 1s

Travelling west was our Football Men’s 1s on a conquest to take down Swansea Men’s 1s, but they unfortunately travelled back with a 4-2 defeat to Swansea at the end of 90 minutes. Swansea will be coming back to our home grounds to take on our team again on the 27th January - let’s see whether our team can take the win from them as they deserve!

Football Men’s 2s

Taking it down the road to Cardiff were our Football Men’s 2s going up against Cardiff Men’s 3 (Medics). Despite fighting like mad, they unfortunately landed with a result of 3-0 to Cardiff at the end of 90 minutes. But don’t be alarmed! They’ll be coming home to show Aberystwyth Men’s 1s what they’re made of on the 4th of November, so be there or be square!

Football Men’s 3s

Staying at home, our Football Men’s 3s went up against Gloucestershire Men’s 5s in what was our first match of the season. They didn’t let first match of the season nerves get to them, walking away with a score of 1-3 to Gloucestershire, with their goal scored by Charlie (who has been awarded Player of the Match), assisted by Nathan. They won’t be playing Gloucestershire Men’s 5s again, so we’ll be saying goodbye to Glos until their Men’s 4s (UDA) visit on the 4th of November.

Badminton Women’s 1s

A tough one coming from Badminton Women’s 1s on their visit to Cardiff Met to play against their 1s. Although they gave it their all, they unfortunately ended the 8 matches on a score of 7-1 to Cardiff Met, with two of their rubbers going to the 3rd game. These things just happen, but they’ve got until January 27th to practice before they take on Cardiff Met Female 1s again on home soil!

Hockey Women’s 1s

Kicking things off on the ATP at Sports Park were Hockey Women’s 1s playing against Cardiff Met Women’s 5s. Unfortunately, Cardiff Met scored a goal early on in the first half, but did not manage to take any more points during the rest of the game! The girls fended them off throughout the second half, but didn’t manage to overtake their score, leaving the end result as 0-1 to Cardiff Met. There will not be a second game between these two teams, so Cardiff Met have got away with it this time.

Lacrosse Men’s 1s

This match was definitely intense for multiple reasons, one being the return of the Men’s lacrosse team in BUCS for the first time in 2 years, being visited by Aberystwyth Men’s 1s. Unfortunately, they ended the 60 minutes with a score of 2-14 to Aberystwyth, but it’ll be interesting to see the progression of these teams. They’ll take on Aberystwyth again on the 25th of November up on the west coast, and then again for the Men’s Western Conference Cup on home ground of the 24th February.

Lacrosse Women’s 1s

Taking place just after the Lacrosse Men’s match was the Women’s 1s, taking on Swansea Women’s 2s. Unexpectedly, the end result was 6-2 to USW, taking home the only win at Sports Park for the week! Sitting on 3 goals was captain Daisy, 2 goals was Amy, and 1 goal was Carys. The team won’t be taking on Swansea 2s again, but will be visited by their 1s on the 4th November. Congrats to the Women’s 1s!

Netball Women’s 1s

Visiting Netball Female 1s today were Cardiff Female 6s, who gave a great fight and walked away with a score of 35-44 to Cardiff. Our team will go up against them again in a couple months time on the 27th January on Cardiff’s home ground.

Netball Women’s 2s

Hartpury Female 4s came over to Sports Park to give a go against our USW Female 2s, and it ended in an incredibly close result of 29-31 to Hartpury. They’ve got talent and they’ve got passion, they’ve got it in the bag this year! They won’t be playing against Hartpury Female 4s again this year, but their next match will be against Royal Agricultural 1s over on their grounds, so the best of luck!

Basketball Men’s 1s

At the time of writing, neither USW or Aberystwyth have uploaded the results for the Men’s 1s match. This report still needs to go up in a good amount of time, so check back again later for the updated result when it comes through to BUCS!

Rugby Union Men’s 1s

Our Men’s 1s rugby team had a good week - they were awarded a walkover from UWE Men’s 1s due to the opposing team conceding their first 2 games. The next time USW will face UWE is on the 27th January before they prepare to win another Varsity match next year!

USW’s Position in the League

Currently, we’re sat on 148.5 points, remaining in our position at rank 84 in the BUCS league. We’re looking at 6 matches next week, 3 home and 3 away, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that some more wins will begin coming our way!
